July 4, 2017

The Rockville Rock Hounds wrapped up a 4 game series with division rival Auburn Wildcats on Sunday. The Rock Hounds dropped the first two games of the series with a 14-8 loss at home on Thursday and a 6-3 loss at Auburn on Friday. The Rock Hounds bounced back with an 11-7 victory on Saturday. Trailing 5-4 in the 7th inning, the Hounds scored 7 runs in the 7th & 8th innings to win the game 11-7. The rally was lead by a 2-run single by Brandt Frazier (Rice University) and a Nathan Gutierrez home run to seal the victory.

On Sunday the two teams had to continue a suspended game from June 13 before playing the regularly scheduled contest. The continuation game picked up in the top of the 12th inning of a 14-14 tie. The two teams threatened in both the 12th & 13th inning, coming up short. In the top of the 14th inning, the Hounds pushed 3 runs across with a mix of walks and errors by the Cats. Hounds Kenny Quilatan tossed all 3 scoreless innings to record the win, striking out 4.

In the finale of the 4 game (5 including the suspended game) series, the Hounds jumped out to a 10-2 lead. Mickey Nunes collected 4 hits, driving in 3, while Grant St. Martin (Sonoma State) hit his 8th home run of the season. Daniel Page came out of the pen, to toss 4 solid innings and record the win, despite the Wildcats scoring 5 runs on borderline calls and bad hop grounders. Kyle Krebs came in to strikeout the potential tying run, sealing the 3rd straight victory for the Hounds.

The 6 wins the Rock Hounds have collected the past two weeks versus the Crawdads and Wildcats moved them to 3rd place in the California Collegiate League North Division. The Hounds have a  3 1/2 games lead over Auburn and 4 1/2 game lead over Walnut Creek. They trail Neptune Beach and Healdsburg by 5 games, but still have 5 games remaining with the Prune Packers and 6 remaining with the Pearl.
