The Rockville Rock Hounds collected their first win of the year in California Collegiate League play, defeating the Walnut Creek Crawdads, in Oakland, CA tonight. The Hounds jumped out to a 1-0 lead with 2 outs in the top of the first, when Grant St. Martin (Sonoma State) lined a single to left field, that the left fielder took on a hop and let get by him. Garlind Webster (Eastern New Mexico), who reached on a walk, came all the away home on the error. Hounds starting pitcher, Alex Pham (USF) pitched 5 strong innings, allowing only 3 hits, and striking out 3. Only one Crawdads batter reached second base against him. Left-handed reliever, Nathan Gutierrez threw 2 scoreless innings, and closer Mark Quinby (UCSD) pitched the final two innings, striking out the final 4 batters he faced, to record the save.
Pham showed flashes of dominance at times. His breaking ball was untouchable early on in the game. Alex leads the Rock Hounds in ERA on the early season, with a 1.00 in 9 innings. The Rock Hounds travel Oakland again this Friday and Saturday to take on the Neptune Beach Pearl in a 2-game series.
