Rock Hounds Tie a Marathon With Caps

June 24, 2016

The Rally Factory Rock Hounds jumped out to an early lead versus the visiting Pacific Union Financial Capitalists on Thursday night, but windy conditions and some shaky defense allowed the Caps to come back and tie the game. The Puff Caps got a run in the first inning after a lead off pop up that was lost in the sky by a Rock Hounds defender fell in, then scored on a couple of quality outs. The Hounds answered back with a 4-run bottom half of their own. In the 2nd inning, the Hounds used a couple of bunts to put pressure on the Caps, and scored three runs in the frame, due to a key two out single by Chase Grant. Grant, the SCSN/Best Buy Player of the Game, finished 2 for 5, with 3 RBI and a stolen base.

After the two teams exchanged 2-run innings in the 3rd, the Hounds looked as if they would get out of a jam in the 4th inning, but a couple of plays that couldn't be made led to 4-run inning for the Caps. The Hounds answered back with 2-runs in the bottom half, thanks to another RBI single by Grant. The Rock Hounds blanked the Caps in the 5th, 6th, & 7th innings thanks to a group effort by Ryan Pearman, Tommy Balmain, and Josh Moore, respectfully. As the shadows turned to dark, the Puff Caps were able to do what no team has done since August, 2015. Reliever Jae Wagner came in with an 11-7 lead and allowed 4 runs on 5 hits. Wagner did not allow an earned run the entire fall and spring at Solano College this past year. The first batter he faced got fisted to third base, which served as a perfect bunt. A blooper to right and a perfectly placed soft pop up, which landed on the edge of the infield dirt, served as the "blows" that tied the game. Wagner did strikeout the final Caps batter with runners on 1st & 3rd, to end the rally.

In the bottom of the 8th, the Hounds got two runners on , but could not get a run across. The 3 hour, 38 minute game was called after 8 innings, due to darkness. The game was broadcasted on SCSN and will be up on their Facebook page. You can click on their link at the bottom of our webpage. The Rock Hounds travel to Healdsburg to take on the Prune Packers on Saturday and Sunday.
